Animal physiotherapy and rehabilitation is a complementary therapy, designed to work synergistically with veterinary care to improve the overall outcome. If we have any concerns regarding a patient's health or recovery, we will refer back to the treating vet immediately. We will make a functional diagnosis and aim to reduce pain and improve functional capabilities over the course of treatment.
When attending for an initial assessment, the owner will answer a full subjective assessment regarding the history and symptoms of the problem. This is followed by a comprehensive objective assessment of the patient. A functional diagnosis is made from the assessment and a problem list is developed. A treatment plan is then made which will include a range of manual treatments and/or electrotherapy, education and home management including exercises. The patient is re-evaluated following treatment. A review appointment will be scheduled if appropriate. The same protocol for assessment is followed at each subsequent visit. Treatment continues while progress is being made and until the goals are reached. Regular updates will be provided following direct referral in order to keep the treating vet informed.
The treatment techniques that we use are evidence based and include manual therapy, electrotherapy and exercise prescription. The majority of cases that we see are for post-operative orthopaedic rehabilitation, arthritis and lameness. However, we have a wide scope of treatment and have treated cases including FCE, post-op IVDD decompression, bilateral brachial plexus avulsion and postural correction for hypermobility syndrome. We are able to assess a patient for loss of functional capacity and develop a plan to improve quality of life. Please feel free to contact us regarding specific cases if you would like to kow if we can help.
